Asus Tinker Board takes on Raspberry Pi with 4K video and Rockchip processing power

Asus Tinkerboard vs Raspberry Pi 3: Specs

Asus' offering is powered by a quad-core 1.8GHz Cortex-A17 Rockchip processor alongside a hefty 2GB of DDR3 RAM. By comparison, the Pi 3 is kitted with a 1.2GHz CPU and 1GB of DDR2 RAM. While initially the Tinker Board seems to offer a mammoth processing boost over the RPi, the former only offers support for 32-bit programs, while 2016's Raspberry Pi 3 Model B has a 64-bit CPU.

It's a Rockchip RK3288 Cortex-A17, apparently has 1Mbyte of L2 cache and 100KB of on-chip fast RAM. Probably the headline is the doubling of off chip RAM and the higher CPU clock rate, and the A17 being a "big" versus the A53 being "little". This chip has been seen in tablets and maybe chromebooks from 2014. It has a faster GPU too. I wonder how much that, or the lack of 64-bit support, would matter to the target audience.

Same physical form factor as the Pi3, including the 40-pin header.

I had a link to a Farnell pre-order page, but it's now dead. There's still a "datasheet" here:

Your link says the price is double the Pi3 - if it has double the RAM and double the GPU performance, maybe that works!
